It’s Not Always About lining your purse, sometimes it’s about filling your heart ❤️

Today started like any other day. I opened my roster and headed off to my first job.

It was booked as a builder’s clean following the renovation of a bathroom.

My task was simply to clean the space ready for the official handover to the client.

When I arrived, I was met by a gentleman who was quite stern and visibly distressed.

Before I started cleaning, I took a moment to sit and have a chat with him.

The more he spoke, the more he softened. And the more I listened, the more I began to understand.

This poor gentleman was lonely and living in a new and unfamiliar turmoil.

His beautiful wife had recently been placed into a nursing home, and every morning he goes there to shower her and spend the day with her.

He was simply lost without his best friend by his side — the woman he had shared so many years with, caring for each other and enjoying their life together in the comfort of their humble home.

As we talked, I discovered that he had never really had to cook or clean. Those were things his wife had always taken care of. His meals now consisted mostly of soup he could heat in the microwave… and there’s actually another story there! 🫣

His home was incredibly tidy, with everything in its place, but basic tasks like cleaning a shower or toilet were simply unfamiliar to him.

We started talking about aged care and whether they had registered for support. He told me they had, but everything had always been managed through his wife’s package.

“I don’t know how to access mine,” he said.

He had contacted his provider but hadn’t received a return call.

I see this far too often. The system can be so complicated and overwhelming for our older generation that sometimes they would rather struggle on their own than ask for help.

But underneath all of that, I could see what he really needed.

He was lonely.

He was lost.

And he was missing his best friend.

We said our goodbyes and I started my planned job.

But I just couldn’t help myself.

I continued cleaning his home — not because it was part of my job, and certainly not because I was being paid to do it. I did it because I wanted him to come home after a long day at the hospital and feel that someone had cared.

That someone had listened.

That someone had noticed.

Around 3pm today, my phone rang.

It was this very gentleman.

I could hear the emotion in his voice as he thanked me for listening, for caring, and for cleaning his home.

That phone call meant more to me than any payment ever could.

We’ll be staying in touch, and I’ve promised to help guide him through the process of accessing his aged care package so he can get the support he is entitled to.

Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can mean the absolute world to someone.

It’s not always about the money.

It’s about human decency.

It’s not always about lining your purse.

Sometimes, it’s about filling your heart.❤️

And today, my heart is very full.
